From the good news file: earlier this week, Delbarton School awarded Reade Seligmann the Delbarton Medal, the school’s highest honor and one rarely given to those outside the student body. The school’s headmaster, Fr. Luke Travers, praised “Reade's courage, nobility, integrity and charity,” adding that the Delbarton graduate “gave us a model of how to handle the pressures that we all experience.”
In an address to the entire student body, Seligmann (wearing the Medal) cited the backing he had received from the Delbarton community, and noted—correctly—“all leaders of every academic institution in the country now have an example to follow.” Indeed, Delbarton’s behavior throughout the case shows how an academic institution can remain faithful to its ideals and loyal to its students.
It makes we want to cry, I am so proud of him, Collin and Dave. Broadhead, hang your head in shame. This is how REAL MEN behave. Good for Delbarton. Good for them.

Since this was picked up by the AP, who always managed to be concise and fair in their reporting, I don't see the NYT on the list of papers across the country who picked it up from AP.

Notice at Johnsville News - another book about the case coming out same day as Coach Presslers - this one from folk at the New York Times - I am going to be very careful not to support the MSM that crucified these boys - most of all the Times.

This was a nice story. The Delbarton headmaster went down to Duke to meet with the five alumni on the team. His thorough due diligence and unwaivering support provided a template as to how the Duke admininstration should have acted.

Within a week of the indictments, the heads of all three prep schools came out in support of Reade, Collin and Dave. As a Duke alum, that's when I made up my mind to stop sending them money until Broadhead was gone. Protecting the farce of the Group of 88 and not doing your own honest investigation of the character of the team was the act of a coward.

I wonder if Brodhead contacted the three or their parents or lawyers and extended personal well-wishings. The public statements released by the BOT and Brodhead were pretty weaselly and Duke seemed to slink into the background after them.

Someone who was pictured actively drinking at an all day boozefest in the same room where women were hired for a lesbian sex show and these minority women then were assailed by racial epithets has been awarded a medal! This is a poor example to send to high school students and cheapens the award given previously to a true hero, a Holocaust surviver and witness! The headmaster really messed up this time.
ReplyDeleteWe are all proud of Reade and the much deserved recognition. I have a son and can only wish that he attended Delbarton School. I am impressed by their spirit and attitude and must assume that Reade is just one of the many fine young men who are being nurtured there. It's so wonderful to see a school really live by its mission.

Reade was not responsible for racial slurs. Reade did,however, attend what you describe as a "lesbian sex show" and was responsible for "actively participating" in what you describe as a "boozefest",(drinking) both of which are legal in North Carolina. (Prohibition ended in 1933).
For these actions, however unacceptable they may be to you, a young man should not face 30 years in prison. It was the way in which Reade handled this situation that was most courageous and noble.
