In the Courtroom

Ben Himan just made an appearance with the Bar's prosecutors, as they prepare their PowerPoint presentations.

The hearing room is currently standing room only, nearly 45 minutes before the start of the session.

Anne Blythe is here to cover for the N&O; Cy Gurney has just arrived as well.

  1. KC: Please do all that you can (as you have all along) to keep up-to-date with the Hearing all of us that, unlike you, cannot witness this spectacle in person.

Great to hear that Cy is present. Presumably, she hasn't served the Fongster with divorce papers yet.

  3. I hope you brought some room deodorizer and fumigant. You are going to need it with people like Himan, Gurney, and Nifong in the same room. They will never get rid of the stink.

  4. For all who are interested, WRAL (a Raleigh-area station) will broadcast the hearing online:

I only work a few blocks up from this whole spectacle, but unfortunately I can't get away. I will certainly be watching everything unfold online.

  5. Court TV is doing a great job of telling us who will testify....Collin Finnerty's mother.....Reade Seligmann will also take the stand.

They reported that where KC is right now is jam packed...people trying to get in to watch the trial.

Kinda wish I had gone over.

  10. Court TV is going back and reviewing the entire sequence of events.

I'd rather see inside the courtroom instead.

  11. They're talking now about Mangum. Many wonder why this crazy destructive b!tch has just disappeared after leaving behind such wreckage.

  12. I think if Collin Finnerty's mother was going to testify against me I would just hang it up.

She found time to help Duke with quality of life issues on campus and is the poster Mom for quality of life planning for her family.

The court would do well to remember The Blarney Stone and John Lennon and Yoko Ono's song The Luck Of The Irish.

Nifong should avoid deceptive nonsense at all cost with Mrs. Finnerty in the room.

  13. Shame on Nifong for parading his son in there with him for sympathy. The kid does not deserve that.

  14. I don't like the streaming coverage on WRAL.COM.

They update it every 18 minutes. Not sufficient, IMO.

Live coverage is best. Court TV is doing the best job right now.

  15. Crystal Gail Mangum also has a hairy ass, just like a chimpanzee.

(not that there's anything wrong with that!)

  16. KC needs to identify which area he's sitting in the courtroom.

  17. Is this Ben Himan the Durham PD investigator whose contemporaneous notes conflicted dramatically with Gottliebs "straight-from-memory" notes?

Does Himan's meeting with NC State Bar prosecutors mean that he will provide evidence against Nifong?

This may be what we have been waiting for... a member of the Durham Police Department stepping forward, describing how Durham DA Nifong hijacked the police investigation for his personal political ambitions.

  18. JLS says...,

CourtTV is doing its usual awful job. {I can not say if they are the best and awful or not as they are all I have had on.] One guy was setting up the motive of winning the election and one of the women cut him off to suggest Nifong was just a true believer in Mangum.

Also I don't believe the have said the name Mangum yet. I could wrong on that, as I am getting ready to drive to class as this is on in the backgroud.

  22. Is Victoria Peterson sitting behind Nifong, waiting to give him one of her smothering, around the neck, bear-hugs?

  23. Abby--

    Don't bother with that.

    Court TV is better.

  27. Debrah - Keep it comin' - and - Thanks!!

  28. The shots of Nifong show him concerned, serious and nervous.

He was reclining in his chair staring intently at the Panel Chairman while clasping his hands together on his lap with what looks like a fair amount of force.

  29. I didn't see big Vickie P anywhere so far......but it's early.

Maybe she and Cy are taking shifts. GIS!

  30. I am sitting here in New Mexico following all your comments with great interest and fascination. Thank you all for your reports.

  31. God how I hate this guy.

I expect the best his lawyers can do is a very technical legaleze type of defense...the kind of loophole type defense that prosecutors and the public generally hates...oh the irony.

I didn't think it was Himan's notes that showed Mangum actually said her attackers were fat/short/etc. in contradictions to the false, err, memory report by Gottlieb, but not sure.

  32. JLS says....,

Well I guess all those calling for a trial in this case should be satisfied as we finally have the first trial starting?

    Very damning.

  35. Ms. Jean is skewering Nifong point by point. This might take a long time.

  36. JLS says...,

Bingo, Himan AND Gottlieb have both turned on Nifong.

  37. She looks nervous to me.

    ReplyDelete
  38. G/d, I hate these typos. i'm not as fast as KC.

    LOL!

  39. Uh oh, Himan must have turned, she states as a fact that on April 10th Nifong knew about the other DNA...

    ReplyDelete
  40. This woman is doing a terrible job though in her presentation.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yes, there is nervousness in her voice. Part of her problem is that there is so much material that she needs to cover and it's pretty clear that she knows this case. She needs to refer to her notes here and there but her head isn't down reading the notes.

She could probably use a glass of water on the podium too. She's speaking at a high volume level (the Chairman asked her to speak up) where it would have made it easier for her if they turned up the volume on the speaker system.

The Bar chairman and the lady to his left are watching intently. The guy on his right is taking a ton of notes.

Nifong and one of his attorneys had a short whispered conversation. One of the lawyers is listening pretty intently and seems nervous. The other lawyer and Nifong look relaxed now.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Watching live on WRAL and while the information the Bar lawyer is presenting to the panel seems to be damning toward Nifong, she is really fumbling all over herself. She seems very nervous.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I feel nothing for Nifong...I have not one shred of sympathy for him...I hope he falls hard...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Katharine Jean is doing just fine. She doesn't have to be an actress.

Imagine anyone assigned this task with national coverage....as you give a detailed list of Mikey's criminal behavior.

    Lots of details to cover.

  45. I noticed that Mikey is wearing a Carolina blue tie, maybe trying to suck up to his UNC Law classmate leading the hearing for the NC State Bar!! It's not going to work, Mikey!!

Jean does seem very nervous, but there is soooooooooo much to tell, and the timeline overlaps itself!!

    Wish I was there!!

  46. It's helpful to deliver your argument effectively, but probably not nearly as important here as it would be before a jury.
