Doubtless this is redundant, but I cannot help but hearken back to the Sam Shepherd murder case and the retrial that was forced because of pretrial publicity! That's back when F. Lee Bailey was still a REAL lawyer. I was a tv/radio newsperson in those days and I remember covering the case and sitting after court in local restaurants with all the rest of the press corps - many of us believing that Dr. Sam did, indeed, do it - but knowing full well there was no evidence.

We don't judge newspapers based upon the color of their ink, rather the quality of their content...
Has a recent audit been conducted on the N.C. newspaper's circulation numbers? Given their liberties with how they present and omit facts wouldn't it be ironic if the H-S, et al also overstated numbers like the Dallas Morning News did a couple of years ago?

The general trend nationally has been a radical drop, so one cannot blame this incident alone. On the other hand the news people are quick to blame the Internet, when it may be something as simple as the content and quality of the presentation.
I read this paragraph with great interest

The trouble with comparing this to Bryant's case is that there was sex in his case and therefore it came down to his word versus hers and miscommunication, if there was any.
Here the guys denied right away there was any sex at all between any of them and the accuser. And the science verified their claims.
I would argue also that CGM's character has been attacked in this case (and justifiably so) just as much or more than Bryant's accuser's was.

I fear the worst - the Thurs Panel at Duke Law will be overrun by agendanistas trying to infuse the prodeeding with their metanarratives.
The fact that the title of the program - 'Trying Cases in the Media: The Role of Prosecutor and the Press' doesn't include an obvious bias toward the defence will cause them to display umbrage of a thermo-nuclear level.
Governor Easley spoke at NYU Law School today and criticized the conduct of Mike Nifong in the Duke case and said it was a bad appointment and that he appointed Nifong in part as a replacement because he said he would not run again.
He said he did not know what the evidence would demonstrate in the case but as a former prosecutor he could say that Nifong's public comments about the accused were wrong.
He did mention the racist remarks made that night by some lacrosse players. I am not sure how that relates to the accused as none of them were accused of making these remarks but I believe he wanted to criticize Nifong but not go as far as to say that this was a miscarriage of justice. This could be for political reasons.
This is interesting as it is the first time that I am aware of, the governor openly criticizing Nifong's conduct.

Just watched OReilly. I had to search for a while to find it, I rarely watch TV. But DAM, the kid was great. That why I am an optimist. The Professers at DOOK might be barely literate malcontents but the students have been uniformly impressive.
This is still a great country if we can keep it out of the hands of the Nifongs and the gangs of 88s.

They visited the abodes of two of the G88 after contacting them asking for a response to explain their inhuman and illogical behavior.
Those two Duke 88 "professors" looked and spoke as if they were knock-offs from a "Happy Days" film locale.

With any luck, these academic dogs will be forced into hiding for the damage they have done to young students.

Excellent segment on O'Reilly with Steve Miller of the Duke Chronicle. Apparently the students are quite unified on the issue of the 88 and they're fed up with them.
Nifong in his bathrobe was not a pretty sight. Never expected to see that in my life. Priceless, really.

To be honest, CGM has not received the same hard scrutiny as Kobe Bryant's accuser. However, as Duke2009Parent has noted, there actually was sexual activity in the Bryant case, while there was none here.
People try to say that the Duke case is a "he said/she said" situation, but it is not. We have an accusation, but one that does not have any proof. None. But CGM has been protected in a way that Kobe's accuser was not.

To use a term from the G88, I think some "deconstruction" of Easley's comments are in order. First, he makes a bigger deal out of the alleged "racial slurs," but that is to be expected.
However, he is saying this about Nifong: "You made me look bad, and you have caused trouble for me." That is something that one simply does not do as a political appointee.
More important, the governor is saying basically that he is withdrawing political support from Nifong. The man has lost some important cover here, and the governor just might want to make him pay. Stay tuned.
